Macquarie laid the foundation stone of a lighthouse on South Head on 11 July 1816, naming it 'Macquarie Tower'. Combining elegance with utility, it came into operation on 28 November 1818 and earned Greenway his conditional pardon. It was demolished in 1883 and replaced by the present replica.
