Koala and young , 1803
John Lewin
Watercolour
Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW. Purchased 1983
ML 896
This watercolour belonged to Governor King, and is the earliest surviving image of a koala. While Lewin has clearly located his koala in eucalypts, he is less successful at the scale of the leaves compared to the size of the animal.
