In 1788 Captain Cook reported long board riding was popular in Hawaii. Duke Kahanamoku introduced the sport here in 1915 and long boards remained popular until the late 1950s.   Then short, lightweight Malibu boards arrived from California, first plywood, then solid balsa, finally plastic... and the rest is history.
