Talk: ST Gill and his audiences

The Anglo-Australian colonial artist, ST Gill (1818-1880), arrived in Adelaide shortly before Christmas in 1839 and spent his first twelve years in South Australia before travelling to Victoria early in 1852. In this illustrated lecture we will examine Gill’s life and a detailed examination of his oeuvre, which suggests quite a different construct to Gill’s biography from that which has been popularly accepted to date.

Robert Young will be speaking about William Branwhite Clarke, the subject of his recent publication This wonderfully strange country : Rev. W. B. Clarke, colonial scientist.
 
W.B. Clarke is known as  ‘father of Australian geology’ and we will have a selection of maps from the collection to demonstrate his story!

When Charlotte Brontë wrote to author Robert Southey asking for advice about becoming a writer, he told her that literature should not be the business of a woman's life. Fortunately she ignored that advice and produced four novels, as well as the juvenile tales of her childhood, and poems. As a result she found fame, notoriety and many friends in the literary world.  April 2016 is her 200th birthday. Celebrate it by learning more about the life and works of this remarkable woman
