Touching the Ground Lightly

Magney House, 1982-83The loose concept sketches for this house show architect Glenn Murcutt exploring the form of the roof. Freehand sketches like these complement measured drawings that make up the Murcutt architectural collection held in the Library.

Murcutt has won international acclaim for his distinctive architecture that draws on vernacular building forms and responds to place and the environment—‘touching the ground lightly’ as he describes it. He has also received numerous international awards for his work, including the Pritzker Prize in 2002.

The significance of Murcutt’s collection can be gauged by the large number of international visitors and students it attracts—more than nearly any other collection. Designers from European countries with strong classical and historical traditions like Spain and Italy are particularly fascinated by Murcutt’s sensitive response to nature.
