Evocation of Sultana Tabet [?], 1908
Kahlil Gibran
Charcoal

During Gibran's time as a student in Beirut (1898–1901) he became fascinated with a beautiful 22-year-old widow named Sultana Tabet, the sister of a college friend. He wrote to her, but her notes back to him were formal and cool. She died unexpectedly, and after her death a friend of hers gave Gibran a few personal items and a packet of 17 letters to him, written but never sent. She had taken to the grave the secret of her love for the young student.
